The Organization
E Pluribus Unum is a nonprofit initiative that aims to break down the barriers that divide Americans by race and class. In its first year, the E Pluribus Unum team traveled extensively across the American South to learn directly from residents about what separates us and what can bring us together, and to find bold and effective solutions to tackle the modern legacy of Jim Crow so that an inclusive new South may be born. In October 2019, E Pluribus Unum released Divided By Design, a groundbreaking analysis from hundreds of extensive interviews, focus groups, and a 1,800-sample survey of the South. Since the release of Divided By Design, E Pluribus Unum has rolled out a menu of programming and projects to generate narrative and policy change. This includes a digital campaign and virtual bus tour in partnership with Stacey Abrams’ Fair Count to promote participation in the 2020 Census; 3 additional surveys in the American South; a virtual conversation series bringing together thinkers and leaders on race and equity; an inaugural fellowship program for Southern elected leaders; story-telling project to collect Southerners’ lived experiences; a policy agenda around equity in the South; and a survey focused on COVID-19 effects on Black and essential workers in Baton Rouge, LA.
